The replica was developed in cooperation between CYMA and CyberGun under official Colt license, offering realistic markings and faithful reproduction of the *M16A1 / M653 model, a compact carbine from the 1970s designed as a lighter and more mobile alternative to the M16A1. It belongs to the Lightning Series, which, thanks to the use of a lightweight aluminum bolt carrier and an optimized return system, ensures excellent responsiveness and a fast operating cycle. The heart of the replica is the CYMA CGS system, developed with T8 and based on the TM MWS platform, ensuring realistic blowback and compatibility with tuning parts.

History

The Colt M653, also known as the M16A1 Carbine, is one of the key models of the CAR-15 program, developed from the 1960s as a modular carbine platform in various configurations. It was one of the first models with a 14.5" barrel, setting the standard for future designs, including the later M4 carbine.

This model was used not only by the US military but was also widely exported, including to Israel and the Philippines, where it was used by armed forces and special units.

M653 carbines were used by US special forces such as Navy SEALs, US Army Rangers, and Delta Force, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s. They were deployed in operations such as Operation Urgent Fury (Grenada, 1983), as well as various operations in the Middle East.

An interesting fact is that the M653 serves as a bridge between the classic M16A1 and modern M4-type carbines, combining a longer barrel for better stability with a more compact design suitable for urban operations.

Construction and details

The replica is constructed from a combination of aluminum, steel, and polymer, ensuring high durability while maintaining realistic weight. The receiver (upper and lower) is made of metal and features “M16 A1" markings, preserving the classic look of the design.

The rifle is equipped with a 14.5" outer barrel, offering a balance between mobility and shooting stability. The front features a CAR-15 style polymer handguard, while ergonomics are completed with a classic pistol grip and an adjustable stock mounted on a metal two-position buffer tube.

The construction also includes numerous steel components that enhance durability, such as the bolt catch, iron sights, sling mounts, dust cover, and parts of the trigger assembly. The replica is powered by a 30-round gas magazine.

In the Lightning Series version, an aluminum bolt carrier is used, reducing the mass of moving parts, which translates into better responsiveness, a shorter operating cycle, and a higher rate of fire. The system is complemented by a polymer buffer that stabilizes blowback operation and improves overall smoothness. This configuration provides realistic recoil, dynamic bolt movement, and high user comfort both in semi-automatic and full-auto fire.
